I have actually read The Book of Mormon many times. It used to be available only as an official publication of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but is now available from amazon.com. An American book of scripture, it helped inspire the growth of Mormonism in America. It has also inspired many commentaries, both supportive and critical. The early modern English is tremendously off-putting to many (Mark Twain called it "chloroform in print" and remarked that if one removed all of the instances of "it came to pass" the book would become a pamphlet), but I happen to love the beauty of the King James version of the Bible. The stories in the book are gripping in their own right--compare Orson Scott Card's thinly veiled science-fiction adaptation in his Homecoming series. Because of the extreme polarizing effect of the book, I'll leave it to readers to make up their own minds about the historicity of the book and about the spiritual implications, but it's worth reading if only because of its effect on the lives of millions of people and because of the stories in the book.
