Easily one of the best books that I have read this year. Honest and reflective without any easy answers.
I just know I will reread this book at some point...it resonated strongly with me.

537046 I `do' religion or religion `does' me and I loved this book. Karen Armstrong is one of my true norths as far as the history of religion goes and this insight into her personal life is even more rewarding.

321673 I liked this book too. You might enjoy The Nun's Story, by Kathryn Hulme (and also the Audrey Hepburn movie of the same name). It's based partly on the experiences of a Belgian nun who is torn between her commitment to the religious life and her desire to be useful in the outside world.

Donald - what a poetic expression: "one of my true norths"! Something tells me you do not live in the "north"... :D
No, but seriously - I have read several of her books and I am really looking forward to learning more about her.

I read a really interesting book some time ago called "Unveiled" - a series of interviews with nuns, ranging from those that lived in the outside community to those that lived totally sequestered. I'm really looking forward to a more indepth history, especially that so many of you praise it.
