Anna's review
Through the Narrow Gate: A Memoir of Spiritual Discovery
by Karen Armstrong
Easily one of the best books that I have read this year. Honest and reflective without any easy answers.
I just know I will reread this book at some point...it resonated strongly with me.
I `do' religion or religion `does' me and I loved this book. Karen Armstrong is one of my true norths as far as the history of religion goes and this insight into her personal life is even more rewarding.
I liked this book too. You might enjoy The Nun's Story, by Kathryn Hulme (and also the Audrey Hepburn movie of the same name). It's based partly on the experiences of a Belgian nun who is torn between her commitment to the religious life and her desire to be useful in the outside world.
Donald - what a poetic expression: "one of my true norths"! Something tells me you do not live in the "north"... :D
No, but seriously - I have read several of her books and I am really looking forward to learning more about her.
I read a really interesting book some time ago called "Unveiled" - a series of interviews with nuns, ranging from those that lived in the outside community to those that lived totally sequestered. I'm really looking forward to a more indepth history, especially that so many of you praise it.
