I really enjoyed this book. At its heart it was a soppy romance, but it was entertaining, had good characters and I enjoyed the historical setting, the early nineteenth century intrigues of English spies. Not that I'd say it was horribly authentic in that way or even meant to be.
Now, I was less enthused about the sections detailing the adventures of the graduate student who is researching these events (embellished by the author). I don't know what it is about graduate students that seems to be romantic to authors these days, but it seems to be a definite trend to use them as main figures in novels. I could have done without those parts and enjoyed the adventures of the spies much more. The student seems a little dense and annoying.
I also hasten to add there is nothing deep about this novel. It is clearly just an amusing romp in altered history, but it was well written and just as entertaining as it was meant to be and I like to rate books based on what I think they're trying to...more
