While this book has some interesting themes (impact of human activity on the earth, especially the sea, the rights and inherent worth of animals) I think you have to be a Sherri Tepper fan to get through the first 150 pages, as it moves very slowly. Also, the characters seem somewhat flat, they serve a role in story rather than coming across as fully realized people. If you like science fiction that focuses on ideas and characters rather than technology, read the Gate to Women's Country or Raising the Stones for an into to this author. A good train read and I'm not sure I would have kept reading if I didn't know the author.
