Oh man this book. I kept yelling at the titular monk as he kept digging a hole for himself and he makes the worst decisions I have ever seen in my life. The book is actually parallel stories between a couple of Spanish dandies and their women and Ambrosio the monk. I don't even like Gothic horror that much but this book was great. It's also a look at the attitudes many Englishmen had towards the Catholic church at the time it was written. Sometimes the bile the author puts toward the church was just hilarious.
