"Cross Fay Weldon with Muriel Sparks and you get an idea of Gardam’s prose. In epistolary form, she deftly traces the growing mental instability of Eliza Peabody, a 50-year-old of no particular talent but with a desire to be of some help to others: like a neighbor who has left her husband and children and disappeared into the wilds of Asia. As Eliza writes to “Joan,” she reveals to us the foibles and troubles of her increasingly difficult existence."
