Surprisingly fantastic thriller! Someone in a small English village is killing those with disabilities, illnesses, or the elderly. Jonas Holly is the young town constable, and the killings affect him personally - both because he knows all the victims and also because his wife Lucy has progressive MS. His feelings and investigation are a counterpoint to the group of homicide detectives sent in from the city to investigate what appears to be a serial killer/spree killer. The book is slow to build these two paths of the investigation, but each continues to twist and turn until the book's explosive (although a very subtle explosion as is the way with this type of English crime fiction) and shocking ending. Bauer does a great job telling this story and building anticipation. It lost one star from me because I've read similar plot twists before and had a strong suspicion as to "whodunit" well before the end, but the surprising part is that it didn't detract from the story. I still desperately wanted to find out how it was going to end even though I kind of knew already. I will definitely look for other books by this author. Highly recommend!
