Excellent adventure. Smith builds in all the logistics as well as the excitement and challenge of a mountain-climbing expedition up Mt. Everest. There’s a lot of movement up and down the mountain in the effort to prepare for the summit dash. At times it’s hard to tell exactly where everyone is. But that was OK for me; it gave even more of a sense of all the people, equipment and fortune tied up in the experience.

I’m not a huge fan of Zopa – the Tibetan monk mountaineer who sees all and tells riddles – too much of a Yoda reminder there. Even so, the story is strong enough to be worth five stars, right up to the peak. And then it slips: a painful fall as far as I’m concerned. The story recovers quickly enough, just no longer as powerful as I would have liked.
