Utterly readable, even if you haven't read Love Walked In, this story stands alone. The author (a poet) has a lovely fluid style. She makes the reader privy to all of the private thoughts (and this is a VERY thoughtful bunch) and weaves it all together with just enough history and background that the story makes sense. And I especially enjoyed how it explored women's friendships - the work it takes to make friends in adulthood. So often characters are "lifelong" friends or fall easily into friendship. Not here, and it was refreshing.
My only complaint was the 14 year old characters seemed so much more mature than their years, it was almost unbelievable.
But this is a great springtime read. It is a deep book masquerading as something lighter.

If it's chick lit, it's a long way from the mainstream of it. She is too thoughtful for that scene to me. Of course, the desigations are sort of arbitrary anyway ;) I put this more in the category with Broken for You... Is that one you've read? It is fantastic. Thinking chick lit, if you will.
no - after Zippy, I didn't enjoy the Today show book club choices, so I wouldn't go near those, but i'll add it to my list :) you may be taking over my blog in the near future....
I didn't care for Zippy, wanted to, like Haven Kimmel's fiction pretty well. I liked She Got Up Off the Couch even less. I read Broken for You before it was selected, actually ;) This is showing my nerd quotient, but it has one of the best developed metaphors in a novel I've read in a long time.
Oh no, you continue to be the queen, I love your blog... I just like to play discussion ;)
I just finished Love Walked In (the prequel to this one) in a chick lit bookclub, but I wouldn't classify it as chicklit either...seems more general fiction to me.But anyway, added this one to my list of books to read...I had no idea there was a follow-up book!
love your thoughts on this melanie...thanks for sharing them - now I want to get going on it even more!!
