Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1)
by Lee Child
by Lee Child
I had seen these books listed in a few 'guilty pleasure' booklists. The beginning of the book promised a lot of momentum (its protagonist, Jack Reacher, is being placed under arrest)and the pacing of its plot and development of its characters kept me reading. However, I am pretty certain I'm not going to read any further in this series. It's mostly because I found myself quite unsettled by the book's brutal revenge scenes and the way Jack cooly exalted in fulfilling that whole "take them out before they take you out" mindset. This is the same discomfort that keeps me out of movies whose posters show their stars glowering over automatic weapons, and I don't think I'll ever be playing games like "Grand Theft Auto". I used to be more receptive to thrillers that portrayed violence in the manner this one does, but these days it bothers me, and I find I can't enjoy them anymore. And, dear reader, lest you worry I'm passing judgment on you for enjoying books such as this, remember I am a librarian (and a rather lazy and complacent one when it comes to considering others' reading preferences). I would never, ever question or moralize or turn up my nose against what anyone chooses to keep on their nightstands.

I've also become unsettled by these types of violence for violence sake video games, movies and books. As long as people realize that it is to satisfy a certain wish fulfillment and not something to be done in "real" life, I think society will be okay.
