I've read Jerome Groopman in The New Yorker and in an essay collection and now in this, and I have to say, I want this man as my doctor! Once again, because my dad is ill, this stuff is particularly interesting to me, but at the same time, I think reading this gives you a way to think about doctors & hospitals & serious illness in a new way. It's so helpful to get inside the mind of a doctor -- and one that can write so well! Groopman shows how doctors' decisions have many variables, how it's important to listen, and even how it's hard to be a patient as a doctor. Maybe I should say that these all read like short stories and are very good reads (why The New Yorker often uses Groopman) -- you might think this is some dry old medical case-study thing, but it's not! Anyway, I think everybody should read this book simply for the reason that we're all going to face serious illness one day.
