I picked this up at the library because the title was so fantastic for a Science Fiction book.
Set in a dystopic South American city, Death as a Side Effect is just plain depressing. The middle aged male protaganist is selfish to the core as he deals with his dysfunctional family from his dying, overcontrolling father, his co-dependant sponge of a sister and his mother who has quietly gone senile while everyone else was self-absorbed.
I slogged through until page 26 before the oppression was too much and I quit. And I hate quitting a book - I have this overbearing need to know how the story ends, most of the time...
I still think the title is fantastic, it's everything else that breaks my heart.
