The Last Child

Fast, gripping, exciting. Everything you'd want from a thrilling crime novel. It certainly kept me guessing, but nothing stood out as especially amazing. It did what it was meant to do, and nothing more.
The writing was a bit off at times, with 13 year olds speaking beyond their years, and confusion in dialogue scenes of who was talking. Also, the word "oily" came up as a description far too many times to count. Things smelled oily, looked oily, felt oily... the whole book was oily. It took me out of the story after I noticed it and it kept coming up.
It was the first full-length book I've read on my iPad. I never thought I'd be able to do the whole eBook thing, but it was exactly like reading any other book (except when I had to plug it in because the battery was dying). I curled up on this stormy day, just like I would with a physical book and it felt exactly the same, which was surprising. If there was a way to rent ebooks, without having to buy them (like netflix) I'd be completely on board.

As a teacher - I can tell you that 13 year-olds DO talk like that... unfortunately.
