I really enjoyed If I Stay. I was going through a phase where I was reading a lot of, for lack of a better term, melancholy books. If I Stay was definitely a good read, however, it had not been my favorite.

Mia was a very good character in the sense that I really wanted to hear her story and find out what happens to her. However, and I might be the only one who feels this way, it was the ending that I did not like.

I should probably warn that the continuation of my review will include some spoilers.

Gayle Forman created this amazing family. Her writing was so powerful when describing their relationship, that one just falls in love with them. When they get in the car accident (that scene itself is rather graphic and stomach-churning) you just feel the full blow of the tragedy because you truly rooted for this family.

Mia, the only survivor, begins to face a painful choice - does she want to give up and move "on" with her family or does she want to fight to survive. I guess I am horribly morbid because I just kept thinking that she should move on to be with her family. That in itself can open a whole new can of worms as to whether or not that is even a possibility. However, Mia chooses to fight for her life and stay to live her life.

This was a very readable story that goes by quickly. You are always enraptured and on edge to find out what happens at the end. It also provides an interesting theory as to whether or not we actually do have a choice in whether we "stay."
