In the rural West of Ireland, two famers cutting peat from a bog discover the severed head of a redhaired woman. The find causes quite a stir, as the wife and young son of the local land baron have been missing for the past two years. The head, however, is much older than that, and two archaeologists, Cormac Maguire and Nora Gavin, are called in to investigate its mysterious origins. As they seek to solve the mystery of the redhaired woman, the two also become embroiled in the search for Mina and Christopher Osbourne, the missing wife and son.
