This is the first book I've read of Lehane's and I think I've found a new favorite author. It's a hefty book of over 700 pages but it didn’t seem that long. Lehane makes me want to turn the page and I found it hard to put the book down when it was way past my bedtime. The story is about a handful of characters whose lives eventually intertwine with one another. These characters are fully developed and unforgettable. We even get a glimpse into Babe Ruth, Calvin Coolidge, and W.E.B Dubois among others. The setting is in Boston just after WWI and Lehane takes the reader through history with the 1919 Boston Police Strike and the riots and violence that ensues.
