Sarah's review of The Bookseller of Kabul
The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seierstad
This book is written by a journalist who lives in the home of a bookseller in Afganistan and observes his family. While the viewpoint is a narrow one, it causes you to see how politics, religion, and customs clash in everyday life. It gives insight into a culture that is, not only completely foreign to Americans, but completely cut-off. The book humanizes the family and culture while also drawing attention to the often atrocious treatment of women and of men of lesser standing in a rigid and conservative society.
