really liked it

A fun new series with an intelligent and likable heroine. Unlike many other amateur female sleuths, Nell doesn't suffer either extreme of self-abasement or overconfidence, so she doesn't create as many plot-enhancing difficulties to get out of. The plot itself is straightforward, and the criminal revealed early, so the challenge is how to catch him rather than figuring out whodunnit. Enough room is left for things to go wrong to allow suspense without keeping the reader up all night biting fingernails in anxiety. A subplot of possible romance is adroitly handled and suggests more to come in later volumes.

The author writes knowledgeably about the environment (Philadelphia) and profession (curating historical documents, fundraising at a nonprofit) and doesn't overstep credibility in her presentation of the police and FBI. In all, this book is entertaining and informative light reading that promises to deliver consistently over time.
