Somehow I managed to go all this time without having read this brief novel, which despite its easily flowing narration and the good humor of its author is powerful and quietly devastating. At first the voice has that British clip that can come across as prim and withholding, but by page 8 I was hooked. There are so many beautifully true observations about village life on the one hand and the full breadth of human nature on the other. The book is a powerful statement about the horrors of war as well as the pain that accompanies any passage of life, even in the most bucolic of settings.
