The Merlin Continuation is part of the Post-Vulgate Cycle, which bridges between The Story of Merlin and a new version of The Quest for the Holy Grail. It doesn't contradict the Lancelot too much, but the tone is significantly different -- I suppose, in a way, it's more realistic, with fewer marvels and more petty feuding. Gawain is less admirable, I'd say, here -- actually, pretty much everyone is less admirable.

Again, the translation's clear and the footnotes are helpful and good. This volume has a distinct introduction, too, which helps to contextualise it.
