I was skeptical about this book at first. I really only read it because it was a book club pick. In fact, 100 pages in if someone would have asked me if I liked it I would have immediately said “nope!” But it grew on me. I became fascinated with Cal’s story intertwined with his family history. We follow a gene mutation in order to describe the narrator’s peculiar and rare condition. Starting at his grandparents on a small island in Greece which continues on to his parents in the then booming city of Detroit right before the Depression and eventually on to Cal’s birth, his coming of age and self discovery. The book has made me realize that gender and sexuality cannot be considered a black and white issue but it rather blends together. Intriguing read.

Sara Narrow-LaPoint this book is great!

Doug Bradshaw I loved this too, Lauren. Some interesting information on genetics.

Sara Narrow-LaPoint isn't october pretty far away?? lol

Lauren *shrugs* Yeah, but we have our books picked out up until the end of the year. Each member picks their book and prepares discussion questions for the book they picked for their assigned month. And its not really every month. We only meet every 6 weeks.
