I am now officially a fan of Gene Stratton-Porter. Written by the same author as Laddie: A True Blue Story, this book is similar in many ways. Stratton-Porter is obviously a lover of nature and one who likes strong characters with happy endings. Elnora is a country girl who enters into a city school and faces many trials as she seeks to fulfill her dream of going to school. Elnora is a seemingly flawless character who is good and decent and kind no matter what she faces. It is a very feel good story and we see her overcome trials, use her knowledge of the woods and her good character to win over many friends and succeed at every turn. And if you enjoy a bit of romance... that comes too. Her love interest is not introduced to us until the book is about 2/3 through... but I liked it that way. By then we knew Elnora well enought to want to see her happy and know that she deserves it. If you liked Laddie, or if you like Anne of Green Gables type of stories..... you will probably enjoy this as well. I will definitely be reading more of this author.

Andrea I watched this movie a lot growing up. Is her mom as awful in the book as she is in the movie?

Rachelle I haven't seen the movie, but she is pretty awful... atleast for the first half of the book. I didn't know there was a movie. I'll have to watch it.

Andrea It was one of those 'Feature Films For Families" movies, who know's if it's still out there. It wasn't that great of a movie, I wouldn't look too hard for it :)

Rachelle I'm LOL right now because your comment just made me realize that we have owned that movie for many years. Several years ago Aaron's parents gave us a bunch of Feature Family for Films that they didn't want. They sat with our movie collection for years, but no one ever watched them so about a month ago I tossed them out. I am 95% sure that one of them was called the girl of the limberlost. I never thought of it until now. So funny.

Kim Freckles is the prequel to this book and it is really great. If you loved this you'll love that too!! Randomly this is the book we are reading for my book club next month.
