Women: A Novel
by Charles Bukowski
my wife and I watched the recent documentary about bukowski via netflix- she is a fan, me not at all. I was suprised to learn that his big chick fucking phase was a fairly brief period in between the time that he became a huge literary star and the period that he settled down with one woman and moved to long beach (in a bungalow, no less.) I was also suprised that he was raised in a typical pasadena middle class house hold- i had always thought he was raised by wolves.
the coolest thing i learned about bukowski from that movie was that the owner of black sparrow press was a business man who decided to start a publishing house based entirely on bukowski's writing, and that he made a fortune- both for himself and the author. that was pretty cool.

I read the first 9 pages of Bukowski's Women and realized I wasn't going to learn anything new about women from this alcoholic egotist. I read the next 300 pages because he's funny as shit!
I've never read anything by Bukowski, save for the poem about the Blue Bird which I really liked and transcribed on napkins for some reason, from my friend's book collection when I was drunk because I didn't want to buy the collection. Then I realized you can find these things on the Interweb, but that's kinda the story of my life. Point being...I'm an idiot, but also, I'm not really a Bukowski Guy. I mean, great, he wrote poems, he fucked lonely, psychotic chicks, he drank booze, he worked in a Post Office, I get it. So did my uncle, but I'm not really a "My Uncle" Guy either. Where did this whole Bukowski/Chinaski mythology come from? I read Women because since I've moved back to N...more
