Horace is visiting the country of Nihon-Ja to learn new fighting techniques. While on this mission, he has developed a father / son relationship with the emperor. While returning from the summer lodge, news arrives that a rival has mounted a rebellion against Shigeru, whose crime has been to try to extend equality to all the clans under his rule. On the run from the enemy, Horace decides to lend his sword to the emperor's defense. Together with a small retinue of loyal retainers, they head into the mountains to try to find a fabled fortress where they can mount a defense. Aided only by mountain timber workers, they slog up the mountain trails to this fortress only the Krikori can find. Meanwhile, word reaches Halt and Will about Horace's predicament. With Princess Cassandra, Alyss, Selethen, and Gundar the Skandian, they set sail to find Horace. I have mixed feelings about this book. Tug, Abelard, and Kicker were noticeably absent and were missed by me. There was not as much humor in this books as in some of the others although I did enjoy the names given to Horace and Will as "titles of great respect." My greatest disappointment, however, is that the series is over. There will be no more adventures to drag me in for a few hours of entertainment and chuckles.
