I absolutely LOVED the first two Hex Hall novels. There are few authors whose books I pounce on at midnight the day of release and stay up all night reading, so that should give you an idea of how much I love Sophie, Jenna, Archer, and Cal.
The relationship between Sophie and Jenna is still fantastic, and that was probably my favorite part of this book. Their worry for each other, their banter, etc, are all familiar and funny and a welcome interlude whenever they're together. There is also a plot line involving (view spoiler)
I'm sorry to say that this turned out to be my least favorite book in the series, however. The action zips back and forth between a lot of locations and the various overlapping storylines felt rather jumbled, which is problematic even if you've already guessed many of the big secrets back when you were reading Demonglass. I had a hard time staying engaged in the story, especially since there were moments that seemed to lend themselves to a bigger emotional punch (view spoiler) than were portrayed. I also got a little tired of Elodie popping up again and again (view spoiler) and the way Sophie's magic came and went at pretty convenient moments.
My two biggest issues with the book, however, were:
1. (view spoiler)
2. DO NOT CLICK THIS if you haven't read the book. Seriously. Don't do it. (view spoiler) Not only did that make me extremely sad, but it felt so unnecessary.
Many of the elements I enjoyed so much about the previous books just felt different here. It's definitely still a funny book, but there's so much going on that the humor doesn't flow quite as smoothly. The parental relationships, always one of the stronger parts of the Hex Hall and Demonglass, were largely absent here as well. And most of all, there's very little time spent with Archer or Cal. What's there relies a tremendous amount on your past knowledge of Sophie's intimacy with them, and there aren't nearly enough meaningful moments between them for my taste. (view spoiler) Don't get me wrong, there are some, but they didn't seem as urgent and charged as the ones in the previous books.
Maybe it's just me? I'm really sad to feel this way about the ending of a series I love so much. I'm very curious to see what my fellow Sophie fans think of this one, though. I liked this book overall, but the surprises that this book offered were just not the kind that I really enjoyed.

Hahah I take it she does, as well :) ugh this book sounds soo awesome I'm glad they finally put up the pictures and synopsis for it!
Um, YES.
Yeah I'm not normally a fan of that either, but when it's a series as good as this.....I definitely wouldn't mind her doing something similar to Morganville. Hmmm I wish she would ( Kagawa is doing a spin-off with Meghan's little brother in his teens for a new series, and I squealed) so it isn't impossible that that could happen.
At the Demonglass event I went to, Rachel said she's not done with this world. She said this is the last of Sophie's story, but that she'd be writing more books in this world. Yay!
*gasp* LIKE LIKE LIKE Sandy! Yaaaay. :) But tell me more about this Demonglass event! Did you practice blocking spells? Was there pink glitter everywhere? I bet RH would be super fun to hang out with.
Aahhhh that's awesome! I'm glad that she's probably going to do a spin-off! :D I bet she'd be awesome to hang out with. Seriously that woman's a genius hahah
I know, there are a lot of books with that title. But I don't mind that she used it, I trust that hers will be one of the best if not THE best. :)
I'm just now reading Demonglass (about 1/3 of the way in) and I'm loving it! Can't wait for this one and, as much as I loves me some bad boys, I'm kinda digging Cal. But now I'm curious about this cliffhanger you speak of... ;-)
I know, I'm dying for this, Princess K and Daphne. I've given the few bloggers who have gotten the ARC the stinkeye! You're so lucky to have such a short wait for book 3, Tara, especially because there is a pretty big cliffie at the end of 2! I like Cal, too--and maybe he'll get a spinoff or something. I just want Archer
Hah, I quietly rated this and intended to say nothing more about it, but you guys caught me out!Umm...let me say that I LOVED the first two books. But a lot of the things I loved about them felt different in Spell bound and it is definitely my least favorite of the trilogy. And something happens in it that made me really upset.
I'm not going to say any more, though, because I don't want to spoil it for you. But don't take my reaction too much to heart, plenty of people seem to be loving it!

Yeah I like Archer for her, although I love Cal and want to read more of him.

That sucks. My copy should be here in about two hours so I will see for myself I guess.
You know down to the hour when your book is going to be delivered? o_OI sincerely hope you like it better than I did, Princess K.
Aw, *hugs* Wendy. (view spoiler) But I COMPLETELY agree with you about the (view spoiler). That I didn't like at all. Shame this wasn't your favourite, but we can always go back and re-read the first two. ;)
(HUGS) :( I was looking forward to reading this book but between the (view spoiler) and the (view spoiler)thing,I don't know if I'd be so inclined to read it now. Is this the last book to this series?
Hugs gratefully accepted. :(Sam, (view spoiler) You're right, though, there are still those first two books. *sigh*
Aww, Joy! I can't believe you read the spoilers. This is the last book, yes, so what's here is going to have to satisfy readers. Have you read the first two books? They're still great, even if this was not (in my opinion).
Wendy Darling wrote: "Hugs gratefully accepted. :(Sam, [spoilers removed] You're right, though, there are still those first two books. *sigh*
Aww, Joy! I can't believe you read the spoilers. This is the last book, ye..."
Yeah. I can NEVER resist. Lol. It's all good :) Well, I guess I don't have much of a choice since I read both books.
I read several reviews of the books in this series and still, I'm NOT sure it's for me. Fab review! I'm the reader that always loves a detailed review.
Oh thanks, yay! I took a look at your shelves and I think you actually might like this series, based on a couple of the other YA books you gave 4 and 5 stars. It's really funny and snarky, Sophie is hilarious, and the boys are seriously, seriously cute. Don't let my disappointment in the third book turn you off. Maybe if you see it at the library or something. :)
Oh my gosh, it's taking every bit of my self restraint not to read the spoilers! x) LOL but your review is brilliant as always, Wendy! I'm so sorry that it disappointed you, especially since you liked the first two so much! :(As long as nothing happens to Cal, right? :) I like him just a bit more than Archer!
Wendy Darling wrote: "Oh thanks, yay! I took a look at your shelves and I think you actually might like this series, based on a couple of the other YA books you gave 4 and 5 stars. It's really funny and snarky, Sophie..."
No, I won't let it turn me off. No worries :-) 3 stars isn't bad lol. I think it'll probably just take me a while, but I will eventually give it a shot. Late to the party = _yay_ ;-)
DO NOT read the spoilers, Mimi, really. I would throw myself upon your computer screen with arms spread to protect you if I could. I really like both boys, even if I like Archer a bit more! But I refuse to answer any specific questions, hah.No, 3 stars isn't bad at all, hah. I just feel very sad and disappointed, that's all. And it says something for the series that I'm still promoting it despite my reaction to the last book, I hope! Look forward to your reaction if you do decide to try it out, yay.
Oh no! 99.4% of the time I'm in total agreement with your reviews....matter of fact I can't think of any disagreements atm lol. So, I'm disappointed to hear that you didn't care for this book. I haven't read it yet, but I've been looking forward to it. This is one time I hope I disagree with you...lol and please don't take that the wrong way. :-)
Tara, this is one of those cases where I sincerely hope you disagree with me, too! And please know I did like the book overall, I just didn't love it the way I expected to. Anyway, we can discuss more when you've read it, hah. And Bella, it's out today! Get thee to a bookstore or library.
I literally just finished this book! I liked it, definitely have a smile on my face but I totally agree with you on (view spoiler) I was confused about the action since it always SEEMED like it would be greater and sort of fell flat. Overall though, I really liked the group dynamics and I think I would give this book maybe something like 3.8.
Ooo, discussion! (view spoiler)
I am really upset about (view spoiler) I have no idea if I'm right, but it seems like there's a door open there. Doesn't make me that happy, though.
I'm glad you enjoyed it overall, though, Elena. I do love this bunch heaps and heaps.
(view spoiler)Ha, I sort of want to re-read Demonglass now and "recapture" all the magic because I think that's my favourite of the series! Instead, I'm going to read the last book in Chaos Walking and probably get my heart crushed.
I read the first one it was cute, but I really wasn't engage in it. It was just like it was missing some central element to make it stand out. So am curious in whether I should pick up the other two. Seeing as it's a trilogy rather than a long drawn out series, I might.
Ack - this one is next up on my to-read list. I'm just trying to decide if I want to read the first two again before diving into this one. I can't wait to see if my feelings mirror yours though, Wendy.
Exactly, Elena. I agree with everything in your spoiler. I totally need to reread the first two books now to make myself feel better. I'm going to read CW at some point too, but probably not while I feel this down. I hear such great things about that series.Aw, I'm sorry you didn't love Hex Hall, Book Briefs! Both it and and Demonglass were both enthusiastic four stars for me. They're all very short, though, if you do decide on giving them another go.
Mithrendiel--hurry up and read this (or them) so we can discuss!! I am dying over here. More. Input. Needed.
LOL I'll get my ass in gear. I just have to finish slogging through Fire Study (which is proving to be somewhat boring...*cries* How could such a great series go so wrong?).
Hah, oh, the Study Books. You're talking to the wrong person about those. ;) You must read Grave Mercy, though! I think you might like that one.
Okay I just finished the Partials (which I freaking loved!) so now its time to get this. Off to B&N I go. :-)
Yay, I'm glad you loved Partials, Tara! Okay, we'll just have to wait and see how you feel about Spell Bound.
I almost went to get this today, but I feel like I need a major refresher before picking it up. Is it sad that I know I loved this series, but I can't remember why, besides Sophie's snarkiness?
Hah hah, maybe a little sad, Jeannette. :) Sometimes I don't remember a lot of specific details until I've read something for the second time, like I did the first two books in this series. I think it's not uncommon if you read a lot of books like we do.
Oh, Wendy, I agree. =( I read about half of this and then switched over to Out of Sight, Out of Time, which was also released today, because I was getting frustrated. I should have felt more, but I just didn't. Even the kissing scenes where I should have had butterflies (because I sure did in the last two)...nothing.
I agree - I'm about halfway through and it feels as if nothing is happening! This is supposed to be the grand finale... *sigh*
Okay, I'm so glad it's not just me, then! Sandy, Bonnie, I thought I was crazy for the way I was feeling--I didn't know if it was the latest of the hour that was affecting my mood or what. (The things you try to think of when you want to defend a book, hah.)No butterflies for me in this one either, and there were plenty in the previous two.
We need to pow wow after you ladies finish, because honestly, there is a lot to talk about.
Yes, a pow wow is definitely necessary. :) I haven't set it aside because I keep thinking, okay.. something has to happen... right??! haha
