Interesting that Tarakan might be more famous to the Australians than Indonesians due to the huge battle in 1945 to take the island from the Japanese. I myself only found out the existence of this tiny island in 2011 when I joined a history tour and visited the remains of the battles: Japanese caves, ruined gigantic oil bunkers, rusted 75 (?) mm canons on hilltops that were used to shoot the hell out of troops in amphibious assault. How I wish I had my diving license then, because I am sure there were lots of ships or other interesting stuff down there.

This book started out not so good. There were so many exclamations after almost every sentence, and I had the suspicion he is a Japanese army fanboy or something since he expressed his fascination of their mightiness lots of times it became annoying. However, once the narrative arrived at the main assault from the Allied Forces, the book became unputdownable. I wish there were diagrams showing troop movements because the combat actions I read were rather awesome.

Glad I decided to read this book after five years sitting in my shelf. History of monumental events happened in your own country as written by one of your countrymen, we don't get a lot of that these days. Never forget your history. 'Lest We Forget, Sisil.' That's the author's scribbled message to me when he signed the book, quoting the Ode of Rememberance. Thank you, Mas Iwan.
