A mild story elevated by a fascinating main character whose problem is solved unsatisfactorily. It felt to me that the parallel stories would combine and resolve in some mystical way, but the ending was prosaic.

I enjoyed the descriptions of painting and artist sensibilities. Even though they were all oddly all uninterested in anything painted after 1920, it worked for the story, and I remember feeling that way myself in High School.

Kostova has a gift for descriptions of place. As in The Historian, she brought to life all the varied locations.

In the end, the book feels more like a character study rather than a mystery. I would have been more satisfied if I had not been expecting something different.
