Have you ever stood in your house, listening to a quiet, unfamiliar noise, and felt the hair rise on the back of your neck? Cas Lowood has, and the unholy hell of what he finds when he investigates will make you jump a little bit in your seat. He's a 17-year-old who kills the dead with a magic athame, just as his father did before him--and now he's faced with the task of killing Anna, a homicidal ghost who was murdered more than 60 years ago.

Cas is a fantastically strong and appealing protagonist, but it's really Anna who takes center stage. Imagine the visual of a pale girl with inky hair floating in a dark house, her beautiful white dress slowly drip-drip-dripping with blood. She's deadly dangerous and full of vengeful fury, however, because of the way she was killed. When you find out what really happened to Anna, it's hard not to feel terrible pity for her--and to understand why Cas has such a hard time killing her.

If you've been looking for a great YA horror novel, look no further. Anna Dressed in Blood is a stunning novel, full of atmospheric spookiness and unthinkable horrors. I cringed reading about ghosts with stones where their eyes should be, I yelped when Cas goes down into a basement full of...dreadful things, and my eyes got as big as saucers when the walls starting bleeding. But although the descriptions are full of vivid imagery and there's plenty of brutal action, what happens isn't at all gross. If anything, there's a dark beauty in the descriptions and an elegance in the writing that makes every scene a true pleasure to read. My reading status updates will give you a peek at some of the lines and scenes that particularly made me shiver, but I really had to restrain myself from posting one every couple of pages, as there's so much to savor, even in simple but humorous lines such as "She's wearing the same smile as her cat." I found just as much to love in the writing as I did the fantastic story, and the cheeky humor made me laugh even in dire and inappropriate circumstances.

This is the darker, more grown-up version of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, and it's much more violent and much more polished. Anna offers an unforgettable thrill of a ride--and it catapulted instantly to my favorites list for the year. I am so excited about this author and I can't wait for the sequel, Girl of Nightmares, to come out in 2012. Read it, read it, read it! I promise it will make you shudder, in the very best of ways.

Kendare Blake
“I’ve seen most of what
there is to be afraid of in this world, and to tell you the truth,
the worst of them are the ones that make you afraid in the
light. The things that your eyes see plainly and can’t forget
are worse than huddled black figures left to the imagination.
Imagination has a poor memory; it slinks away and goes
blurry. Eyes remember for much longer.”
Kendare Blake, Anna Dressed in Blood

Kendare Blake
“Over the course of my life I've been to lots of places. Shadowed places where things have gone wrong. Sinister places where things still are. I always hate the sunlit towns, full of newly built developments with double-car garages in shades of pale eggshell, surrounded by green lawns and dotted with laughing children. Those towns aren't any less haunted than the others. They're just better liars.”
Kendare Blake, Anna Dressed in Blood

Kendare Blake
“Anna's eyes soften, and the stubborn tears begin to recede. The way she stands, the way she breathes, I know she wants to come closer. New knowledge fills up the air between us and neither of us wants to breathe it in.”

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) haha she's great isnt she!

Wendy Darling Any ghost who sees an annoying meathead and then literally rips him in half is okay in my book. :D

Wendy Darling Well, be sure to hide the book in a safe place, Cillian. You never never know what Anna might get up to when you're not looking. o _ o

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) Haha, I'm enjoying it so much, trying to read slowly and not finish it though.

Wendy Darling Yeah, I don't think I have that kind of will power, Kate. I need to find out what happens next! How far along are you? I'm looking forward to bedtime so I can read some more.

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) up to page 153, I'm trying really hard to be slow, not really working haha, I'm dying to find out what happens also, lol finding it hard not to skip to the back and see, but that would be bad!!

Wendy Darling Nooo, no skipping, Miss Kate! You know you'll regret it if you do. We're almost having a readalong, which is fun. :) You've read twice as much as I have, but I'll probably catch up with you by tomorrow.

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) Yeah, I know I will regret it, so I'm being good! haha I know, I got excited when I saw that you were reading it as well.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker I can't wait to start this!

Wendy Darling Michelle, this book is SO up your alley. :) It's so fun that we're reading it at the same time! Another almost-readalong.

I guess I shouldn't read your updates too closely! Actually, you don't do spoilers in your updates..so I should be good.

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) I finished it Wendy! It's going to be my favourite of the year I think.. and that's saying something!

Wendy Darling Wow, that's saying something, Kate! I'm pretty sure it will make my top faves for this year, too...but #1 is pretty spectacular. Can't wait to read your review!

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) So many great books out this year, its been crazy, and so many fantastic debut authors! I'm not sure I can do Anna justice in my review.. but I'll give it my best shot!
Can't wait to see what you think of it when you finish!

Jo Sooo excited to read this one :-D

Kelly Leigh Oh, now I'm even more excited to read this. Can't wait for your review.

Ashleigh Paige Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand without even seeing the review, this book is going on my to-read list. I've been thinking about it for a while anyways because it sounds great, and you liking it is a pretty good sign.

message 21: by Michelle (new) - added it

Michelle Warren Can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Wendy Darling Oh my god, you guys. This is exactly the way a YA horror novel should be written. It's creepy, it's fun, it's gorgeously written--it's everything you expect it to be and want it to be and more. I'm so excited about this author!

message 23: by Lindsey (new) - added it

Lindsey Oh this sounds truly fascinating!

Wendy Darling Cillian, you would LOVE this book. I mean, LOVE. Clutch your copy to your chest and don't let it go!

Lindsey, I see Stephen King and lots of UF on your shelves, so I think you're going to enjoy this one, too. It's incredibly descriptive and...awesome. I have to wrap my head around this for a review to do it justice.

Ashleigh Paige Well, if you love it and Cillian will love it... Imaginary Girls Take Two? And I almost bought it today, but a shiny finished copy of So Silver Bright was on the shelves and I was like, "MINE!" and I only had money for one book! Bad me, bad, bad bad!

Oh well. There will be other times.

Ashleigh Paige Yep! And you better hurry, Cillian~! Those cake pops are looking awfully delicious and I'm getting hungry... :D

Wendy Darling I have a mint chocolate chip cupcake in the fridge, ladies. It tastes like a Thin Mint cookie. :D

I can't wait for you two to read this! I had to restrain myself from posting status updates every two pages, there's so much in this book I loved. It would be Imaginary Girls, Take Two indeed.

Ashleigh Paige Hey, the Barbie told me she wanted to do a Britney Spears and shave off all her hair; I just helped her out. If Ken wants to go bald too, I won't exactly tell him no.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker I think your review is perfect just the way it is!

Wendy Darling Hah hah, you and Maja always like these short placeholder reviews, Michelle! This book deserves way more words than that. :)

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "Hah hah, you and Maja always like these short placeholder reviews, Michelle! This book deserves way more words than that. :)"

Short, sweet and to the point! Maja is a smart girl, you should listen to her, doesn't she speak like 20 languages now? She probably learned a new one today!

Wendy Darling Probably. It's pathetic, because I'm still trying to master English over here. (And I listen to her all the time, which is how I move books like these to the top of my list!)

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "Probably. It's pathetic, because I'm still trying to master English over here. (And I listen to her all the time, which is how I move books like these to the top of my list!)"

I often forget that English is not Maja's first language (as well as many GR friends on here). You wouldn't know it when you read her reviews.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "Probably. It's pathetic, because I'm still trying to master English over here. (And I listen to her all the time, which is how I move books like these to the top of my list!)"

Maja is gonna love us talking about her when she is not here..hehe.

Wendy Darling III know. I am constantly amazed (and humbled) by how great everyone's English is, much better than many native speakers. Maja always surprises me when she uses colloquialisms and such...and sometimes I even have to look up words she throws casually into conversation. (Like "omnastics." Jeez.) I don't know why I'm friends with her, really, it's pretty bad for my ego.

She just has to deal if people want to talk about her awesomeness. :D

Giselle English isn't my first language either and I often find the most grammatical errors in English speaking folks - funny huh!?

So to keep talking about Maja before she gets here - she's doing a number on my TBR list. I used to be able to keep up. :( She's adding stress to my life!! Bad Maja!!

message 37: by Meg (new) - added it

Meg I'm curious what ended up making this 5 stars for you!

Wendy Darling Giselle, I always cringe when I see spelling and grammatical mistakes in native English speakers, but it's particularly shameful when you consider how well the rest of the world seems to manage with our puny language. And yeah, Maja's probably been personally responsible for at least 100 books to my TBR list in the few short months that I've known her. :)

Meg, I'll try to come up with enough English words for my review to explain why I liked this book so much!

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "Giselle, I always cringe when I see spelling and grammatical mistakes in native English speakers, but it's particularly shameful when you consider how well the rest of the world seems to manage wit..."

I apologize ahead of time for all my grammatical mistakes as a native English speaker/writer. I promise I do much better verbally (at least I hope). Something misfires when I go from brain to keyboard.

Wendy Darling Don't be silly, Michelle! I always enjoy your reviews. Besides, in the end, I think only the serious mistakes really matter, such as those printed in publications...the rest of us are muddling along as best we can.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "Don't be silly, Michelle! I always enjoy your reviews. Besides, in the end, I think only the serious mistakes really matter, such as those printed in publications...the rest of us are muddling alon..."

It is definitely my biggest insecurity. I try to not let me insecure self show on here but as you can see, I'm not very successful. I'm working on it!

Wendy Darling I've seen you worry over your reviews all the time, Michelle--and you really shouldn't. Long or short, I always know how you feel about a book, and you've pointed me towards more great reads than I can count!

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh earlier when I was talking about spelling/grammar, btw, it is sort of a pet peeve of mine. But it's my own issue and I know in the larger context of things, that sort of thing really doesn't matter in most day to day situations--it's the heart and reasoning that count. And please know my offhand remark wasn't intended as a dig at anyone! Least of all you.

Giselle I've never registered a grammatical error in your reviews Michelle so if you do any they're minor! Those that bother me the most are when people can't tell the difference between "they're",'their" and "your", "you're". It's also often that I see mistakes in books - THAT is a pet peeve of mine.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Wendy Darling wrote: "And please know my offhand remark wasn't intended as a dig at anyone! Least of all you...."

Oh I know it wasn't a dig at me at all. It's my own insecurities. I'm a big girl and I should put on my big girl panties and toughen up. You would think graduating law school would make me a tough girl but it hasn't. I'm just a softie who is trying to get a backbone.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Giselle wrote: " It's also often that I see mistakes in books - THAT is a pet peeve of mine." ..."

You know if I find a grammatical error in a book, I know it is really an obvious one, since I'm pretty oblivious to errors in general. So I usually email the author to let them know. I'm not sure why I do that since I'm sure they already know but just on the small chance they don't. Some authors are really wonderful and respond with a "thank you", others never respond back (though, to their credit, I might be emailing them on the wrong email). It's a strange thing since I'm not sure why I care but I do.

Maja Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalking wrote: "Wendy Darling wrote: "Hah hah, you and Maja always like these short placeholder reviews, Michelle! This book deserves way more words than that. :)"

HOW did this happen?!? I never said any such thing! It's frightening how these stories keep growing and growing uncontrollably.
Go talk to Lisa. She speaks WAY more languages than I do.
And Michelle, I adore your reviews. You're awesome AND you're our queen.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Maja wrote: "Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalking wrote: "Wendy Darling wrote: "Hah hah, you and Maja always like these short placeholder reviews, Michelle! This book deserves way more words than that. :)"

WHY, WHY do you always have to use me as a scapegoat? They're talking about YOU, not ME!! Suck it up :D
Plus, my word-inventing skills are more developed than yours. AND false-friends ones.

Wendy Darling Do I need to remind you about Circle Nine? I believe you check the comments from that thread, you'll see that both of you advocated that I keep my three-word placeholder "review."

I'm glad you're loving this book, too, Michelle! Anna kicks ass. So does Cas.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Lisa O. wrote: "Maja wrote: "Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalking wrote: "Wendy Darling wrote: "Hah hah, you and Maja always like these short placeholder reviews, Michelle! This book deserves way more words than that..."

We can talk about Lisa as well! I'm very good at talking about other people when they aren't here! Of course, you would have to leave or just act like you aren't on!
