Beautifully written, but slow-moving story set in the 1800s about a man who has the gift of dowsing and passes it on to his son. From the title, you'd think that the story is centered about that, but it's actually about a (fictional) family history of the 1800s and the Oregon Trail. Rather bittersweet--there are a lot of deaths in this book that capture what life was probably really like living on the prairie and then taking the Oregon Trail. On the section about the Oregon Trail, it was hard not to think of the game.
