Just finished this book. It is indeed a page-turner, for the most part. And, continuing with my India obsession, I loved reading something that took place in India and was about (mostly) Indians. There were definitely some skimmable passages (sorry, Mr. Roberts!) because this is a monster of a book at over 900 pages, and I didn't find the philosophical musings of some of the characters all that important after I'd read the first three, or four, or five.

I was also disappointed in PART of the ending, but I guess if you're an author of a true story about your own life, you can't just lie to "make the ending better".

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book!

Shantaram quotes to ponder:

1. "Fanaticiscm is the opposite of love"
2. " 'Is your father living, Lin?' 'I think so. But I...I can't be sure. And I don't care, one way or the other.' " :(
3. "There’s no heart like the INDIAN HEART." :)
4. "‘Not married? Thirty, and not married? What’s wrong with him?’
‘He’s European. A lot of them get married only when they’re old.’ " :D

Otis Chandler I've heard good things about this and it's on my to-read list. Glad you liked it!

How is fanaticiscm is the opposite of love?

Shannon Hi Otis! It's definitely a page-turner, albeit a 900-page page-turner...

Here's the rest of the quote that I am enjoying pondering: "fanaticism is the opposite of love. A wise man once told me – he’s a muslim by the way – that he has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded jew than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. Winston Churchill once defined a fanatic as someone who won’t change his mind and can’t change the subject."
