bookshelves: did-not-finish, young-adult
Read from May 03 to 05, 2011

After 88 pages I gave up because I had no clue whatsoever about what was happening.

Chime was odd to say the least. It was peculiar from the get-go, but intrigue carried me on. But 88 pages in, my clueless feeling still intact, said intrigue was chased away by confusion, which was eventually bested by boredom. It's a shame really, because I do enjoy the author's writing. It's quirky. I do enjoy being dropped into a story, having to deduce along the way what's happening. In other words, info-dump free. But 88 pages in and I'm still perplexed, I was begging for any kind of info-dump. Not maniacal poetry. I think this is definitely a book that everyone should try to read, because to call this book unique is a vast understatement.

I know, right? I so wanted to like it, but maybe if I understood, well, the freaking plot I could've liked it. We need a fantasy translator stat!

you know that book The Thief? read it a couple weeks ago and had same problem with it. not nearly as odd as chime but still, i barely understood what the heck they were talking about/doing half the time in the book. sooooooo frustrating. *sigh* same with Burn Bright, actually. i've been having a pretty horrid run with weird books lately :D

Kelly Leigh Oh, The Thief. Yes. Had to check on that one. I'm laughing because I felt a tad slow when reading it awhile back. There were definitely moments Of confusion for me as well. Thank you, Aleeza, for making me realize it's not just me with these weird-ass books. I'm not alone ;). Haven't read Burn Bright yet, and it will probably stay that way for awhile.

EVERYONE loves burn bright except me, it seems, so you should go and give it a try. then i can feel happy when you (hopefully) don't get much of it either! ha, what can i say. i just don't like feeling like the only slow kid on da block :P

Okay you're on. But last I checked my library didn't have burn bright so maybe they'd didn't get the story either. I'll keep trying. Us "slow" ones have got to stick together :p

i got an ebook of it. seems like there's only one website you can order it from if you want it in the usa--it's mentioned on wendy darling's review, methinks. quite a pain, to get, these aussie books!

also, have you read
Finnikin of the Rock? it was also insanely confusing to me in the beginning and is still is, just a bit, but the story's amazing and i'm almost done with and i LOVE it, despite the fact that i'm listening to its audiobook, whih i dont generally prefer. that one seemed to confuse a lot of people, it seems.

Ah, Mr. Finnikin and his damn rock. Yes, I tried. Desperately. A few times to boot. I was dreadfully, painfully bored. Not sure what I was reading. I chalked it up to my mood, it can be quite mercurial at times. I Refused to shelve it as did not finish, thinking that I'd give it a go in the future. But you and I seem to have the "slow" thing going on, so I'll give it a go again. I trust your opinion. :)

i was also quite bored in the beginning. but then these characters just grow on you--their emotions are SO well-articulated, i'm telling you. and the story is so complex, well-written, and has quite a few twists as well, so all in all it's fantastic :D

I'll definitely move it up on my to-read list. And I won't give up, I'll keep on reading, because I love twists. I love rich characterization. And methinks I might've picked Finnikin up after the amazing Daughter of Smoke and Bone. And any book after that was destined to be blah! ; )
