This is possibly my favorite Michael Connelly novel yet. Mickey Haller is a great hero - or maybe antihero is a better word. Although his methods are legally and morally questionable, and he definitely makes mistakes, I couldn’t help rooting for Mickey. He’s a complex, sympathetic character whose job affords him almost no respect from others. The conflicts he faces are truly gut-wrenching - nightmare situations that actually made me tear up a couple of times. But Mickey takes on every obstacle using his devious intellect and skillful manipulations. The mystery is also one of Connelly’s best. I guessed one of the plot twists, only to be completely blindsided by the ultimate revelation. Though Harry Bosch isn’t in this novel, the supporting cast is vividly drawn, particularly Maggie McFierce, Haller’s ex-wife. Overall, I could barely put this book down. I loved it from start to finish, and I can’t wait to read more about Mickey’s adventures. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it will be difficult to live up to such a suspenseful, compelling novel.
