The authors' task was to situate key themes of sociological theory within the context of the post-socialist world. Each chapter is packed with citations and engagements with the major thinkers on topics including class, modernity, globalization, civil society, and memory. I was especially taken with the chapter on civil society, and less so with the ones on class and anomie. However, the book is not intended as an introduction to the topics. It is essential for specialists working on social research in the region.
