This is my favourite of all the Midnight Breed books so far. Shades of Midnight left us with Jenna, the human friend of Kade's breedmate Alex, barely lucid, and talking in a foreign language only Tegan could understand after having been held captive in her home, tormented and fed upon by the Ancient for a couple of days (I'm never really be sure how much time passes in these stories, what I think is a day or two will later in the books be referred to as a couple of weeks).
We pick the story up in 'Taken..' back at the compound about a week later when Jenna comes out of her stupor, with Brock the powerful Breed male who has been at her side using his talent to draw away her pain to keep her grounded. Meanwhile resident genius Gideon is running tests on her and makes some startling discoveries of exactly what the Ancient was doing to her while he held her. The more he finds, the more questions arise. What's happening with Jenna? Is the 'chip' implanted by the Ancient at the back of her neck changing her at a genetic level? What is the bond she seems to have with the dark breed male who seems reluctant to leave her side?
All this plays out as Dragos ramps up his plans for world domination and his bid to take out the never ending thorn in his side, that is the Order, once and for all.
