I read The Dark Is Rising and Greenwitch back-to-back, so here is a review of both at once:

My overall impression of this series so far is that the stories are FANTASTIC but the characters are somewhat weak/contrived: the stories themselves carry you through the books, but if you stop to look at the characters themselves, they come across as emotionless and somewhat robotic. They always seem to know what they should do, and things often fall into place without them doing much. Also, I find the character of Will Stanton wholly unconvincing as an eleven-year-old - the kid needs to be fourteen or fifteen at LEAST for the way he's written in these books. But anyway. I thought The Dark Is Rising was fantastic, but found Greenwitch less impressive, mostly because it gets too caught up in the supernatural. The next book up in the series, The Grey King, is the one that won the Newberry (The Dark Is Rising was a Newberry Honor book), so I'm excited to keep going and finish off the series.
