Altough I haven't read the others in this series, this one stands alone fine, and stands out by being a book about a boy who cares about flowers as well as basketball; a book about an African American kid in which being an African American kid is not a major issue of the story, or even mentioned (just illstrated on the cover); and a ghost story that takes place in the middle of a hot summer, and mostly during daylight hours.
