it was amazing
bookshelves: humor, victorian
Read from April 29 to May 07, 2011

The first time I read this book I was about 14, and the moment I finished it I started it over again. It's kind of been that way ever since.

Yes, there is some Victorian sentimentality. But there is also Bigg's boy, the straw hat that saved George's life, Harris and the swans, "I just met Mr. Henry VIII in the lane", the stuffed trout, etc. etc. etc. One time I read it sitting next to the Thames watching the rowers go by. That was the best.

It will always be there for me when I am myself feeling a little seedy (though haven't got housemaid's knee).
