This started out kind of meh and then deteriorated into downright creepy. The actual love story is pleasant, but I don’t think I’ve ever read a more child-centered romance: everything is done for Liza’s sake. A typical comment from heroine Holly “When Liza smiles, we’ll know [we’ve done the right thing]. That’s what it’s all about. We must never forget that.” But Liza is obviously emotionally disturbed and no one does a thing about it except to give her her own way, no matter what the cost. Reading this was like reading about people tip-toing around someone with a narcissistic personality disorder and having that person be the star of the book. I will grade it up a bit for an unexpected, touching twist at the very end.
