Structure and character-wise this is pure PNR. The thin SF veneer changes pretty much nothing except the fact that the strong silent hunk isn't a vampire or werewolf (the fact that the heroine takes an instant dislike to him in the first scene still tells you exactly where they are going to end up...).

Not that any of the above is cause for instant dismissal or a bad review. What gets this book there is an unbearably whiney and entitled first person narrator and a plot / background that has the sketchy thinness more common to TV SF than the written form.

There is some OK action and it does pick up a bit towards the end; but getting there was a bit too much of a chore.
