April 1865: The Month That Saved America
by Jay Winik
by Jay Winik
I really enjoyed this in-depth analysis of the last month of the Civil War. Jay Winik succeeds in balancing background information with cutting descriptions of the race between Lee and Grant's armies for supplies. Winik examines how the Union and the South were able to reconcile, and how it could have gone wrong. The amount of information was targeted at readers with some knowledge of the events leading up to the war and leaders at that time, but provides sufficient background that they can understand the consequences of the leaders' actions. Overall, it was a very readable account that I would highly recommend.
