Fade Away (Myron Bolitar, #3)
by Harlan Coben
by Harlan Coben
Now that I've discovered Myron Bolitar mysteries (per the author's comment that the best detective
stories of all time were the Spenser books by Parker - which gave Coben great credibility), I checked out the first three books. After reading the first, I picked up this third one instead of the second to read first (a mistake Allison would never make). Anyway, it was very good, with background on the injury that ended Bolitar's basketball career. Sadly, it's the story of another sports hero gone bad. These books have witty dialogue and an occasional partner that handles most of the violence, when needed. The partner, Win, is a man of few words. He answers his phone, saying, "Articulate." I got a new insult: "The man is a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic." Regarding a parking place: "He usually managed to find a cozy spot underneath what must have been a nesting ground for loose-stooled pigeons." "Myron's Taurus stood out like a zit in a Revlon commercial." "She made a sound with her coffee that some might loosely label 'slurping.' Moose in the tri-state area scattered in search of mates." "Every once in a while somebody tapes a crime instead of a bunch of cops beating up a perp." "Blackmailers have the loyalty of election-year politicians." I also learned a new basketball term: SWB (slow white boy).
