11 Birthdays

Loved it. Like Groundhog's Day for 11 year olds!
This is one of those books I picked up knowing absolutely nothing about it, having not so much as read the summary on the inside flap, so the supernatural element came as a bit of a surprise (though you get a big hint that something's coming from the mysterious Angelina right at the beginning), though truly I was probably just as pleased as Amanda to get to redo that miserable first 11th birthday.
This has been one of the most popular picks amongst tween girls choosing from our "Battle of the Books" bay at work, so I started to wonder why. Now I know. Completely delightful. Even as I recognized what Mass was about to do (here we go. I've seen this before), she does it well. Like a remake of a silly movie you love. Who cares, as long as they do it right? And for a lot of the kids picking this up, this may be the first repeating day story they encounter.
I wasn't sold on the mystical apple seed scenario at the end, otherwise this would be getting five stars.
