In the preface of this book, CS Lewis writes, " I never read an autobiography in which the parts devoted to the earlier years were not far the most interesting." The same can be said, I'm afraid, for this spiritual memoir, which is nicely written and very interesting when discussing his early years but does not go very far in explaining his conversion from atheism to theism and then Christianity. I read the book originally about twenty years ago, and I picked it up again because I remembered some disparaging words about 'sport' in the Anglo-American tradition; alas, I could not rediscover them. But I got so caught up in the book looking for them that I had to read it entire - and I guess that's a good sign!
