It seems to me that conflicts reveal the most about who we are. Margaret Leroy's historical novel, THE SOLDIER'S WIFE presents a plethera of decisions, some life or death, allowing character development between the binding of the book and internally in each reader's imagination. What would you do? Vivienne's conflicts range from loyalty to her soldier husband to a forbidden love with the enemy who occupies her Island in 1940. What about risking her family to feed a starving stranger in the German work camp on Guernsey island?
What would you do in extreme times, horrific circumstances with little reserve and few historical events to guide you? These are questions brought on by the attrocities of WWII.
Engaged from the opening chapter, and in the hands of an excellent storyteller, I found a few answers.
****
We all have such richness in us-the lives we have lived, the people we have loved, all the things we have longed for. Wherever we go, whatever happens, we carry this richness with us.
****
Seems like triumph to me, as was this novel's rendering of the human spirit! Highest recommendation. Favorites!

13.0% | "Thank you Goodreads, Hyperion and Voice for the advance reader's edition of THE SOLDIER'S WIFE by Margaret Leroy. Guernsey straddles the mainlands of Great Britain and France. What will Hitler do with this Channel island? The writing is suburb, the characters believable, and the suspense is palpable." |
