Hunt has created a complex and absorbing world inhabited by fascinating characters and odd creatures. Unfortunately, the story wasn't told as skillfully as it should/could have been; the pacing is uneven, the prose is choppy in some places and repetitive in others (how many times did we need to be reminded that Stave is disreputable?), and the quick-switch multiple POV thing was a little confusing, especially at first. But despite its flaws,it was a highly enjoyable read once all the bits and pieces and various political machinations started to come together.

Three stars because it has great potential, and because I love steampunk. I'll probably read the next book in the series, though this one works fairly well as a stand-alone.
