It's too hard to get all worked up over the idea of a monster virus with no known cure, no known method of spread and certain death. While I can definitely understand the fear the book could inspire when it was written, the impact has been significantly reduced by real events. Growing up in a world with HIV/AIDS has taken away that the abject horror and turned it into daily life. Maybe that's sad and scary in it's own right, but it's the way we live.
