Exciting premise for the story-line and first half lived up to expectations. The last half seems draggy and repetitive. 2 star rating represents average across the book. The stories are very different, but there are significant context similarities between this and Diana Gabaldon's Outlanders series. Across all comparisons, I felt the Gabaldon's writing, story, characters and insights far superior in every respect...across all 7 books. And I have read much better books focusing solely on the life of a slave in pre or Civil War south. I had hoped that looking at slavery through the eyes of a 20th/21st century individual would add new, different and really interesting perspective. Overall I felt the author failed to maximize this unique perspective. Net, net, the book is okay, but no where near my hopes and expectations.
