The Sorceress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #3) (pp. 483)

The 3rd book of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel finally hits its stride. The tale of good versus evil between warring factions of ancient creatures and immortals on Earth gets less wordy and finds a better pace.

There’s so much going on, but the reader is finally starting to see all the character development of the first two books really pay off. The lines between motive and ethics blur. Relationship dynamics among friends ,allies and enemies become more complex and interesting. New famous mythological and historical figures show up as major players. Scott’s use of each is purposeful and fits with absolute logic in the world he’s created.

This book is less about the chase, but it’s still the same central premise of capturing the prophesized twins. Reaching the last pages, the number of answers sought by the reader clearly aren’t being resolved, but some threads are starting feel complete enough to give the reader satisfaction. A large focus on Pernelle Flamel covers character history wanted in the first installment.

Like each of the previous installments, Scott ends the book abruptly and the reader is left both elated and reaching for the next book in the series. Where the first book felt like a fun D&D like romp, the 3rd has a rich mythology of its own that starts to feel more like elements of LOST.

I still take issue with what Scott considers both a title and an ending. But there’s at least three more on the horizon and the ride is a lot of fun.
