This book is a pleasant enough work of historical fiction, but not really my cup of tea and I'm not positive why. The 2 main characters are trapped by their station in life; he the child of a poor, landless Italian couple who basically handed him over to a future of slavery; she from a noble but impoverished French family. They meet in the French court of Louis the XIV where he instantly falls in love while her sites are set higher. She is apparently drawn from history where he might or might not be. Their interactions are totally fictional. It reads like a standard romance novel though the relationships are more complex and it doesn't build towards the typical Happily Ever After ending.
