Temple Grandin is fascinated by all kinds of animals and it shows. She's really eager to tell us about this dog, or that horse, or a particularly intelligent parrot, and how they behave. She's familiar with animal behavior research; I learned a lot about how these engaging creatures think and act. I loved one story about a research study which compared rats and humans; the rats outperformed the humans! The complex human brain is not always an advantage.
Grandin is an inspiring example of how a person can overcome a disability and build a remarkable career. Her work with the livestock industry has considerably improved the treatment of those animals. She explores her conflict over not being vegetarian--she feels she has a physical reason why she must have meat. If we could just convince her to go for a consultation with Dr. McDougall, Dr. Esselstyn or another physician knowledgeable about veg diets, she might be able to take her wonderful compassion for livestock animals to its logical conclusion . .
